Prep for "Letter from Birmingham Jail"

Andrew Carnegie once said, "The men who have succeeded are men who have chosen one line and stuck to it. "

Discuss what this quotation means. Then think about an issue you feel strongly about; discuss what that issue is and why you feel that way. How far would you go to support your convictions? Explain your thoughts completely.

  1. The line can be taken in a positive and a negative manner. The positive side of it would be that very successful, very rich men have stuck to one thing and one thing only to help them get to the top of the pecking order. On the negative side of things men that have only stuck to one thing and therefore offered no variety in their life. Their success is built on one or a very small variety of things that mean only money to them.
And issue I feel strongly about is the backlash farmers get from the people that have a need to complain about how the farmer does his job to raise the food they eat. Most farmers don't complain about the consumer however and how that the urban areas are now starting to grow out into the farmland and take away the land that has been growing the food that is to feed the people or to feed the animals that are going to feed the people. To support my convictions I would go as far as I feel comfortable. It may not be a very big topic but the world population is starting to grow bigger by the day, but if the farmland we grow crops on is getting smaller every year. Soon there won't be enough food to feed the people due to too much urbanization and too less farmland to grow the food upon.

  2. The men who are dedicated to what they are doing will see great results in the end. Now it could take some time to reach that goal, so that doesn't mean you can't reach it. Some issues with this is, some people don't stick to what they got, they tend to ignore it or leave it without knowing what they really have. It is pretty vital that you see all your options before you choose, if you choose wrong, it could be the worse mistake of your life. Their isn't a limit of how successful you can be in life. For an example you could know a gas car inside and out, but why stop their? You might as well study/ learn about diesel vehicles, because they are a lot different and sometimes more trickier to work with. Just because you thought your limit, their is a lot more potential inside you and in this world. So before you make a choice in life, think to yourself, will this help me or haunt me later in life?

  3. The quote, "The men who have succeeded are men who have chosen one line and stuck to it. " means one thing. The people that persevere and don't give up when life gets hard are the people who will succeed. A personal example of this quotation happened with me during the summer with heights. I always wanted to learn how to do construction so I got a job doing it. However, I didn't really like heights. At first I was a little hesitant to get up on the top of the buildings but I did it because that was my job. Now I'm not really afraid of heights at all because I faced my fear even though I didn't want to. This shows that if you stick to your path even when the times get tough, you can succeed. If you give up every time something gets difficult, you will never get anywhere in life.

  4. I think this quotation means that your in jail and your writing a letter. I mean thats kinda the most logical reason I think. A issue I feel strongly about is why do we have to take so many core classes. This is a issue because they usually fill you schedule with classes that you will never use or with stuff you already know. If we only had to take the classes we wanted to take everyone might actually come to school more often and show up on time. Its bad enough we get stuck in the same building for seven hours a day but to have us sit on our you know whats for the whole time and listen to stuff we don't want to learn that just makes it even worse. If we could just take the classes we know we would use in the future it would cut out a lot of bs and shorten up the year or make it so we learn more valuable things. I would go a long ways to support my conviction but I don't know about the whole jail thing because you have to pay to be in jail and I am way to cheap for that. Thats like paying a babysitter that has a gun to watch you 24-7 and thats not my cup of tea.

  5. This quote means when a person is arguing or trying to make a point and there is when that person starts arguing their side and they have their argument and they stick with that same argument the whole time they will be the ones to succeed.
I don't like that the government supplies so many people with welfare for so long. I feel this way because there are a lot of people that do nothing and the tax payers and old peoples social security pay them. I think that them people should only get money for 6 months and if they not back on their feet by then thats too bad. The money that is being used for that could be used in better ways. Such as fixing roads. I would go as far as talking to the senator and any other person that could get that message to congress.

  6. The quotation means that the people that stick to the same thing there whole life and don't keep changing everything they do will come out ahead because they stuck to that one thing. The reason they will come out ahead is because they stuck to that one thing and got good at it. And for the people that don't stick to one thing just get good at one thing and then stop and does something else there not experts at and then there back to square one. One issue that i feel strongly about is the issue where everyone is treated the same. The issue is where everyone is treated the same and not one person get treated better or worst or gets something better than others. The reason i fell this way is because i don't want to be treated like crap and then watch everyone else get treated better. I would go to the extreme to support my convictions.

  7. To me this quote means that people who stick with one goal are people who have succeeded at that goal. Instead of picking multiple things or changing your mind all the time, they stuck with that one very special goal that they knew they could succeed if they tried hard enough. An issue I feel strongly about is passing high school. You have to pass high school, that's all that's to it anymore because with out a diploma you will go no where in life. I will stick to this one goal like it is my life in the palm of my hands. I would go really for with me issue because anymore you always need to get smarter and smarter. This will never go away because of our technology nowadays. I figure I better get with the program and become part of the future if you know what I am saying.

  8. This quote means that the men who make it far in life are the men who find their one path in life and follow to the promise land as martian luther king jr. once said in his I have a dream speech. "The men who have Succeeded" What Does Succeeded Really Mean Does It mean to have a lot of money or have a big house, some people may think that and some people but the very few are the people who think successes Is a family a good wife love and self wealth. The people who only care about money are the people who usually do not succeeded in life because they don't care about their family because they don't have to they have a whole bunch of money.

  9. Andrew Carnegie once said, "The men who have succeeded are men who have chosen one line and stuck to it. "

What this man is saying is that the one who succeeds is the one who chooses one path and doesn't jump around from thing to thing like if u want to be a policeman for your job then work to be a policeman not a fire fighter . maintain one job once u set your mind to it u can do it. like me im a junior in high school its the end of the year and i still don't know what i want to do so im going after a little bit of everything for a job. i dont know much about being convicted of a crime but if i was convicted for something i did not do i would fight for the end of time.

  10. I feel like this quotation hits the nail on the head. I reason I feel this way is that we have to many people that are not doing anything about successful they are in a way just wait for something to happen right at the foot step of there door. Like in the "The men who have succeeded are men who have chosen one line and stuck to it. " It takes those people to go out and succeed and strive at the best of their ability and not let anyone get in their way. The issued that I fell is every important and also a big topic in our government today and that is unemployment. I fell like it is a big factor that is hurting our government and causing a economic failure and then leads into more people on unemployment and people living off the government. I support this issue in many ways one is that leads into higher tax and bigger cuts out of peoples pay to help support those who do not have a job. How can we fix this problem? I believe that we should create more jobs for the people who are unemployed.

  11. This quote in my terms means if you have something you want to fight for or a goal you want to achieve. Stay with your side and don't fall into the other sides opinions or beliefs. People give others bad criticism and thats what make people second guess their ideas or goals. There is one issue I feel strongly about and thats animal abuse. I really disrespect people who talk about and think it is an ok thing to do. I haven't been fond of animal abuse for quite some time. I personally would would write letters or make more ads on the sad situation. I have only once written a letter about animal abuse, but i have thought about doing it again.

  12. This quotation means nothing ever came easy. If a person wants something to happen, they need to work hard at it in order to succeed in whatever it is that they want.
This goes right along with what I believe. I believe that if a person wants to get anywhere in life and make a good amount of money they are going to have to work hard. I don't care what TV says, nobody ever made just a pile of cash by sitting on the couch. This leads me to another topic that I have a major problem with. People that receive government aid and don't even try to find a job. I realize that people are going to need help once in awhile but if these people are just sitting around when they could have Jobs. My last paycheck, the government took $1.16 per hour and I am only in high school not making a whole lot per hour. The government wants to raise taxes because the infrastructure is so poor. I think they should put some stipulations on what these people that are receiving government aid. Put a length of time that they can receive it for. Make them take a drug test. There is always going to be a way through the system but it is ridiculous that me, a 17 year old, is working hard so some low life in their fifties doesn't have to. It really gets me going whenever I get talking about it. If I ever have the chance to talk to a congressmen or senator, I will have no problem telling them how I feel. It is just ridiculous in my mind.

  13. This Quotation means that you need to find something that you like and stick to it and some day you will succeed. You may find something that you like but you don't make a lot of money, stick to it, because you like it. You might not make a lot of money at the beginning but if you stay with it you will succeed.
I feel strongly about an education change. Now you have so many required classes that you can't go to school and learn about something that you want to do in the future. almost everything that we have now prepares you for what has happened in the past and I feel that that will some day hurt us big time.
