Prep for "Armistice"

Countess of Blessington stated, “Prejudices are the chains forged by ignorance to keep men apart.”
In a well-written blog, discuss what you believe is the meaning of quotation? If you don't know what words mean, look them up so you can figure out what the Countess is talking about.  Then, in your blog, discuss how her quotation fits in with historical events before and during our lifetimes.  Make sure you are responding with how those events fit... avoid listing.

  1. Prejudices doesn't have to be against those of a different color of skin. It can be against someone who lives in an enemy country of yours. War is the chains that keep men from coming together and knowing their enemy, they are ignorant to the fact that the person who is in the enemy country is no more different than yourself. War is what makes a man blindsided to the fact that we are all equal.
At the time of the Revolutionary War we were against the British and fought against their men. Now today the UK is one of our allies who we support and they support us in major wars. Japan was an enemy of ours in WW2 after they bombed Pearl Harbor, but now the hate is beginning to thin out to nothing as time passes on. Also the same with the Cuban missile crisis there was a ban put on so no American countries could trade through Cuba therefore making it more of a 3rd world country with the lack of technology advancement and underdevelopment. The embargo against cuba is now being considered to be lifted so that the country can become more advanced and get out of the old days that it is now stuck in.

  2. Ignorance ties a certain race or group of people down like a chain, they cant vote or contribute to society. They was created to keep people from having to interact with the ones that they don't like. They are almost always based on cosmetic things like their skin color or sometimes the way they talk. The ignorant are the people creating the chains because they only look at the person and judge them off that and never give the person a chance to do anything. This fits in with historic events because it states exactly what has been happening for hundreds of years people get left out or discriminated because they look or act different than the rest. Segregation is a good example there was prejudice involved with it because of the way they were treated even after they were free of slavery.

    1. I'd really like some specific examples rather than just a generalization. What about slavery? What about their treatment? Keep thinking

  3. This quote is trying to say that prejudices is what is keeping people of different races apart. There is nothing bad about the other person it's just that some people are to ignorant to see that they are just as good as themselves. Black people around the 1960's felt this way. The white people were not willing to let the blacks become part of their society. That is why the Civil rights act took so long to happen. Another example of this was slavery. The white people didn't think the blacks were worth any thing other than work.

    1. Keep going with the meaning of the quotation. Give some more specifics. What about the 1960's? What about slavery?

  4. The quotation "Prejudices are the chains forged by ignorance to keep men apart.” can mean many different things. I think it means that the reason prejudice is around is because everyone thinks too highly of themselves to get along. In the days after the civil war the whites thought they were better than the ex-slaves, and they refused to share anything with them. Adolf Hitler thought that everyone that wasn't the "Arian Race" needed to be exterminated, so he brainwashed his people into thinking the way he did. They then did a ton of damage to other people, countries, and religions. Prejudice will always be around because people will always be ignorant and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

  5. I feel the quotation means that a mans ignorance is what causes them to have prejudice among themselves and that is what makes us not like one another. This quotation fits with the wars that have happened over the years, because we let our ignorance get in the way and then no one got along and then before you know it a war breaks out.

  6. People are afraid of new things, now that doesn't mean we can't try them. We should over come our fear over certain groups, or events. Chains hold us back, kind of like our ignorance. Once we hear a certain event or fact about that person or topic, we automatically like, or dislike it, their isn't a in between. Now that doesn't mean we can't hear what others have to say about it, and maybe they could change your mind.
Now i can see where some people are coming from, but does that give you the right to be against something or some one? Unless you are a well known person in this world, and people look up to you, that doesn't give you the right to judge others. You can persuade others to believe you, but who are you fooling...
It's like the Jews, just because one man, Hitler was against them, he was the man in charge. I still to this day don't understand what he had against them... they were innocent people, what treat did it cause Hitler? Now their might be a answer, but not to my knowledge, so the next time you see a different efnic group walk by you, don't automatically assume their bad, because maybe deep deep inside them, they are the best and nicest person on earth.

  7. I think this quote means that ignorant men are afraid to accept the someone else that is different from them and the chain is holding them back. They are being ignorant to the other racist and are being ignorant. This has caused alot of thing to happen in the history. The separation of black and whites, and making the blacks slaves and not letting them have the freedom we did. There is also the prejudice in homosexuality and not liking the people because who they like. A lot of things have came from prejudice and not allowing yourself to like someone because of what they look like or who they like

  8. In our society today I believe that prejudices is still in todays society everywhere. Some people are prejudices because it is that way they where raised and the culture they have evolved around. There are many things in our todays society that has tried to stop the prejudice. One events that goes into my mind right away is the civil right movement and Rosa Parks. The reason that they do is because they stood up for what they believed in and also so that they can be treated the same way, because truly “prejudices are the chains forged by ignorance to keep men apart.”

  9. I think the quotation means mans ignorance is what causes them to have a prejudice attitude. That is what makes us not like one another. This statement goes along with the wars that have happened. We let our ignorance get in way. no one gets along and then conflicts happen and wars may start.

  10. After reading this quotation "Prejudices are the chains forged by ignorance to keep men apart.” it makes you realize there are many different things it could mean. It refers to prejudices as chains and I feel that is because it is a heavy topic that weighs people down and keeps them from achieving some of there goals. After that he begin to categorize the chains as being formed by ignorance. This is true on the behalf of people just thinking they are better than someone else just because of the color of there skin. Ignorance is thought to be the failure to understand somethings and often just go with the flow in a unintelligent way. So all these things are what keep men and people apart. People degrade each other just because they are ignorant to the truth and don't know any better and decide being prejudice is the easiest way to handle the situation.

  12. Countess of Blessington stated, “Prejudices are the chains forged by ignorance to keep men apart.” I believe that what this quotation is trying to say is that people whom are prejudice are not right they are ill minded. people a prejudice towards others and all it dose is weighs them down it makes them feel as if they are no better then anyone else i believe that prejudice is a very harsh thing for people to do men were prejudice against women in earlier ages and that made the women feel as if though they were not as good as men and it really belittled women this is not a good thing it is bad i do not believe in being prejudice and i think they're should be serious precautions against those whom are prejudice. another aspect whites were prejudice against blacks again this is not right they are equal to us and they shall not be depicted for there kin color.

  13. You have a good start. Remember to use end punctuation and capital letters. Could you add in some specific examples of race & prejudice. Bring it back to the idea of ignorance and chains.

  14. Prejudice. The use of certain things to separate people for no good reason when people do not like certain people because of race gender preference and stupid little stuff that we need to leave each other alone so we can live in peace.

  15. This quote is saying how people are afraid of change. People always say they are not afraid of change but deep down they are. We are afraid and I think that that refers to the chains. People will always hate other people but we shouldn't take it out on them. During world war 2 Hitler hated the jews so he tried killing them all and locked them up. It's like the quote don't judge a book by its cover. If you see someone with tattoos all over their body don't automatically hate them. Just think everybody is the same on the inside.
