Reflection on "Crumbling under Our Wheels"

After read the news article and discussing information in class, how could the infrastructure issue affect you?  How do you feel about these problems?  What do you think we should do as a nation?  Discuss your thoughts completely.

  1. If I'm on my way into a different state and I don't know where I am because I've never been their before and there is a blockage on the road because of an issue I might not know where to go. With not being familiar with the area and not being able to know a quick detour route, I might be stuck there for some time. That would be no fun as well if it was one of my friends from a different state I was going to visit. Infrastructure issues affect us close to home as well. If a bridge is out or a road is being repaired that is on your way to work, you have to make a detour which will stall you getting to work and facing an angry boss when you get their. I feel like we don't put enough money into roadways and that we should fund it more but people wouldn't be willing to pay the extra taxes that it would take to fix the roads. Politicians also should set some focus on roadways and less on if they are going to get re-elected and raising campaign money. Just by raising the gas tax a few cents is not going to majorly hurt people. The few cents could lead to millions of extra dollars for roadways so that we can finally fix the infrastructure issues we deal with today.

  2. There are many problems with infrastructure in America. It is mainly the roads and bridges that most affect me because the electrical grids and pipelines are property of companies and they spend money to fix them. I drive on roads everyday and bridges often. I feel that there are some major problems but around here our bridges and roads are pretty current. I know there are places that the roads are bad and they need to be fixed, so I thing that the government needs to get fuel to the consumer cheaper. Then they can put a heavier tax on fuel because then it will even out. If a heavier tax is put on fuel then more cash flow will go into fixing roads and bridges. Taxes aren't fun to pay but it is part of your duty as an American. Prices to fix roads and bridges have gone up, but taxes haven't. Doesn't make much sense to me.

  3. It can affect me because I live in the United States and drive on the roads and bridges everyday. The roads and bridges can just crumble out from under mer, "That's a scary thought." I never really looked at it this way until now. It is crazy how we haven't put more money towards roads and bridges to make them safer and better. I mean there are still bridges around that are 100 years old that is crazy to think. The builders back then did a real good job but now a days there is so much going wrong with it because of the weather over all the years and the amount of traffic. I think raising the gas tax would be better yes, but if we do that we better see some outstanding bridges and roads. That is the only I see us getting the roads and bridges fixed, because the government sure isn't good with handling money. Thats the only way I think we will get better infrastructures. The government is like a baby if you don't do what it wants you to then it gets mad, but if you do it just wants more and more of what you have been doing.

  4. After reading this article I realized that something needs to be done with The United States infrastructure. There are bridges, roads, and dams that need to have repairs done on them. I think it's kind of scary to think that a bridge could buckle when we drive across them.
The issue of weak infrastructure does affect me greatly. If we didn't have good enough infrastructure we would have no way to getting from one place to another. We wouldn't be able to get to school to learn or we wouldn't be able to go to the places we need. I think repairing our infrastructure is something that needs to be done. If we have to raise the tax on gas then that's what we need to do. Without infrastructure, this country would not succeed.

  5. A bridge in iowa could collaps at anytime. I think we should build our bridges up as we get the money quit trying to tax the last penny out of all the people these days. As a nation we should slowly build up are bridges from the oldest to the newest as we get the money. Don't tax the last penny out of us just show us we can do it with what we have.

  6. Well personally i have delt with a infrastructure issue in our town we have had a damb witch carried a road across it fail or have a breach. We lost Docks, boats, Jet skis and some even lost there homes. This mostly does not effect me directly besides fishing and spending time with my family that lives on the lake. We used to spend most of our summers out on the river either on the pontoon or are Malibu. I think that the designers of our roads and bridges should put more time into our bridges an make a longer and better lasting bridge. Our bridge went down not because it was week and not because the bridge failed it was because a while back the water burrowed whole underneath one side if the damn and when they fixed it they filled whole with sand and gravel witch eventually did the same thing and caused the damn to breach.

  7. Before reading this article I had no idea how bad our bridges really were. This could affect me in many way. One would be the obvious driving on a bridge thats collapsing. That would be a scary experience. Another thing is if they up the gas tax. I go through a lot of gas and diesel compared to a lot of teenagers. If they up the fuel tax it would making farming and filling up the tractor a lot more expensive. I think this is a problem that needs fixing but a fuel tax isn't the right way to go about it. The way to do it is to quit loaning and giving money away to all them foreign countries and focus on our own problems. We spend million in other countries fighting there wars and defending there home land when we get nothing out of it besides being the country with the most debt. If we took the money from Obama care and cut all them people off and made them get there own insurance like the rest of us. We could pay for quite a few bridges. So for once if we used our tax dollars to benefit us instead of other countries maybe we would have some nice roads and bridges. Obviously we did something right 100 years ago when we put up these bridges without going trillions of dollars in debt.

  8. When a bridge collapse, we only see the damage it will do to our economy and we have to find a different route. But do we see all the effects from that bride collapsing? We don't really think about how old the bride really was, or how the structural of the bride is doing.
When a big bride goes out, their just more than concrete falling, their's pipelines, electrical components, and even water management. Scientist say that brides are only suppose to last for about 50 years, and some are well over 50 years. We know that the brides structure will collapse any day, but do we honestly do anything about it? We wait until the bride itself actually collapses.
Why can't we just spend the money on the brides that need it, before it's to late? It causes delay on traffic, angry people, and plus it makes prices go up!
Brides today aren't safe, and we need to fix that. I would rather spend a lot of money of brides, than having to spend more money on injures and deaths all because of a bride collapsing. So when you drive past a bride, ask yourself, how old is this bride, and when will it collapse? Because at any time and moment it can collapse, and you could be it's next victim.

  9. The infrastructure affects me in many ways. That is how goods are brought and taken from around here. If the Infrastructure is bad then the goods can't be transported as good or fast causing increase in prices. Another way would be that The electrical grids could go down for a while causing big problems. Such as livestock to die. If a bridges around here goes bad then I might not be able to get may goods out to the public or get to the field to pick the corn.
I feel the problems need to be fixed in the next 10 years. We should build new bridges and not put 250 million dollars in a bridge to temporary fix it.
I think that the nation should raise the gas tax to 25% and fix all the bridges. There should be toll booths on each major bridge with more than 250 cars on it this would help pay for the bridge.

  10. I think this is a main problem because it affects me and any one that travels on the road. Bridges and roads are very dangreos anymore and people are starting to realize that. They know this is a problem but don't want to pay any money for it. We need to raise gas taxes in every stat by 20% and not spend money on stuff thats not nessicary like campain things. Every bride that is out there should have a toll bouth. The big bridges that are main ones with cars traveling on them all day every day. As a nation we need to realize this problem and spend we the people money on fixing them so we don't keep killing people when they collapse and hurting people. this slows down are transportation from water highway to road highways. When one bridge goes out it effects alot more than just that bridge. so we need to find away to fix these bridges so traveling by land is safer and more faster in the long run.
