The Last Lecture: Chapters 8 - 11 Blog

Chapters 8-11
Read through the 4 prompts below and choose one to write about.  Show me you've read the chapters.  Spend time letting me know all of your thoughts.  Use textual evidence to prove your ideas as well.  Make sure you have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

1.  What insight did you gain into the “no win scenario” in chapter 9?  Do you believe that there is such a thing?  Why or why not?
2.  What makes a good leader in your eyes?  How does it compare to Randy’s?  Who do you think is the ultimate leader?  Why do you believe this?
3.  Discuss Randy’s dream with “prizes.”  Did it surprise you?  Discuss.  What is the biggest prize that you have ever won?  Explain the situation.
4.  Discuss Randy’s idea of the “brick wall.”  Is he correct in his ideas?  Discuss.  What is a big goal for you?  What would happen if a brick wall got in your way?

  1. 1. What insight did you gain into the “no win scenario” in chapter 9? Do you believe that there is such a thing? Why or why not?
The no-win scenario is kinda a self explanatory phrase. It basically says that in a certain situation everyone is the loser. Or like with Randy's case, only 4% are the winners and the other 96% die.
For me I have never seen the no-win scenario phrase before I read "The Last Lecture." Shatner was the one who sent Randy the photo of him with the writing "I don't believe in the no-win scenario." Which means he believes that Randy can fight against the cancer wreaking havoc on his body. In some situations there has to be a loser, but not all the time.
I do not believe in the no-win scenario because someone, somewhere, is winning against a situation. Even though theres a loser on the other side at least there is a winner.

    1. Is there any other insight that you gained in the chapter and this saying from Captain Kirk? Remember, he says he does NOT believe in the no-win situation. Therefore, he needs to strive and reach those aspirations. So I think the last questions don't quite fit this thought.

  2. He wanted to be captain James t. kirk captain kirk knew everything about leadership and he wanted to be just like kirk. he watched captain kirk run the shit and he thought it bettered him in not only work and other places but in his marriage also. i believe that theres noway from watching him on tv that he could influence what goes on in our life and also i think star trek is VERRY VERRY STUPID and don't see how anyone could watch it and say it influenced there life by watching Captain T.Kirk.

    1. I'm not sure you truly gained enough insight while reading this chapter. Also, didn't really answer the questions that you were to write about.

What makes a good leader in my eyes are, is she/he responsible, motivated, and respectful? If you aren't any of these, than you are not a good leader. Being a leader is a important roll in life, it teaches others to work harder and be better in life, so one day they can be a leader themselves. Randy's leader, (kirk) was a good leader also, I don't really know what he all does, because I don't watch the show. In Randy's perspective he sounds like the best leader any one could have! I personally believe that everyone is a leader in their own way. Not every one is perfect, but they know a certain subject and can teach other's to do what is right. Take me as a example, I'm not the best in school, so don't follow me, but if you want to know more about car's, I'm a pretty good leader, for the most part. Everyone can be a leader in their own special way, you just gotta know what your best at. People might say, "oh your bad at this",or even say,"your awesome at this, teach me how you do it". Which one would you rather hear? the good things about you, or bad? i'm guessing probably good, so if your good at something you enjoy, spread it to others, so they to can enjoy what you do,and hopefully become a leader just like you!

    1. What were those specific qualities that Randy discussed? Keep expanding on the chapter knowledge. Interesting thoughts on how a person can be a leader... I'd love to hear more.

  4. #1 When Randy grew up he always watched Star Trek. There were many charcters but Randy's favorite was Kirk. In Star Trek there was a situation where everybody died and nobody one the war. Then Kirk came and visited Randy when he heard he had pancreatic cancer. He told Randy he doesn't believe in a no win situation. He told him this because he believes Randy can beat pancreatic cancer. Personally I don't believe in a no win situation. When a problem occurs there are always going to be the bad things that come with it and there are going to be good things that come from it. I think it depends on the way each person looks at a situation. Some people are very pessimistic about everything and those people might have a no win situation. Some people are very optimistic and can see the bright side in the darkest situation. I believe if you try to find the good in every situation you will not have to worry about a no win situation.

  5. 2. I believe that I could be a good leader because im not afraid to stand up for the people i care about and I like to be in the lead position on almost everything I can give the group I lead some direction and Randy would agree, He was the same way he was always there for the people he loved, and he was never afraid to lead anything he was always dreaming about being like captain Kurk from Star Trek and he thought that Kirk was the ultimate leader, he was always loyal and never backed down from a challenge if he knew his team could handel it. I believe that Any war veteran Is the ultimate leader because they sacrifice everything to make sure that everyone in the U.S. is free and has a future, they lead attacks in war and they lead their families when they are home they don't only lead they are heros they keep us safe and free. I have far less reasons why im a good leader i dont usually lead things but when I do it does work better that i would expect, and I think Randy would agree that i make a good leader. I believe that in order to be a good leader you must be willing to compromise and make everyone you lead happy or they won't listen to you and you must be patient, everyone you lead wont be perfect and not everyone moves at the same speed. Also you have to be willing to sacrifice yourself or whatever it is that your fighting or working for.

    1. Some interesting thoughts on how you make a leader. Who else in your mind is a good leader & why? Do make sure you punctuation your thoughts so it's easier to understand.

  6. 3.) When Randy was talking about him winning prizes. His dream was to be the coolest kid at the carnival or amusement park. He felt left out or naked so to say when he did not have a big stuffed animal beside him that he won at the carnival. It does not really surprise me that Randy does this because when he got cancer he had to find that sense of happiness and also when he was a little kid buy winning these stuffed animals. Like Randy I have won many prizes that makes our family and myself. I like showing cows and pigs. When I am showing them either way if I get a purple ribbon or not I am still having fun. I have won so many purple ribbons and grand champions, but the one I will never forget is when I got grand champion two times in a row at the Iowa State Fair.

    1. Work a bit more on the chapter and getting down the ideas of the chapter. Expand on your win as well.

    2. You need to continue to take a closer look at the chapter and show that knowledge. Expand on your "win" as well. It has gotten better.

  7. I am doing number three. So Randy is a guy with cancer and he is going to die. He wrote this book the last lecture which is really good. If you have not read it yet than you need to. Obviously you have read it if your in this class but hey if you're not in this class well then there you go. I choose the third one because it relates to me. How Randy was with prizes and how I came to be around prizes.
When I was growing up my sister had tons of stuffed animals, I mean tons. She always won them at a fair or bought them. That is how is relates to me kind of. Also one time I was at a fair this chick came up to me and said I bet you can't when that big stuffed bear for me. I mean this bear was the same size and the one Randy had. It was a ring toss thing I had to do to win it. He gave me three rings and said make all three and I made all three. I won the bear and that was the last I saw of that chick. I did it for a chick and Randy did it because he was like his dad, "he felt bare if he didn't have one by his side."
This is how I related the story to me and how it surprised me that Randy kept bears and stuff like that. All in all I don't mind stuffed animals, but I know people who hate them and I don't know why. Randy was a very interesting man and it's a shame that this had to happen to him. People all over the world win stuffed animals and I'm sure they never once though about Randy a important man that had cancer. #bear

  8. Randy talks about brick walls in many chapters. In this instance in chapter 11 Randy really wanted to help the People at Disney with there Virtual Real project. There was brick walls in his way.First he had to convince them to let him help which took a lot work. Then Randy wanted take a part form his and take it to Disney but he had to go thought his boss. Randy said that sometimes the hardest walls to cross are the ones mad of flesh. I would say that Randy is right. There are Brick walls every where. My big goal is to build a 1000 head finisher but dad don't think that is smart. There is one brick wall the other would be the cost to build it. I will have find a way to convince him it is a good idea to build one. Then I will have to save enough money to build one and to fill it. Brick walls are in everyones lives. And we all need to find and way over or though the wall.

A good leader in my eyes is someone that always tries and never give up till they get what they are trying to accomplish. Randy's leader was Captin Pausch -james t. He liked him because he was always helping Randy. He could teach Randy to be a better husband or a better teacher. I do not think Captin Pausch is the best leader. I think Rob Derdeck is the best leader. Rob is always the leader when they are skating and he is always leading the crew around. This shows that he wants to be a leader. He is always giving to the poor and never gives up. Even when its little thing when he is skating around. He will keep doing the trick till he lands it. The only thing that will stop him is when he can't do it anymore because he is hurt. Another thing he will never give up on is making someone day better. He will make you laugh and have a better day. He is my leader because he never gives up and he is a leader to his crew.

    1. Captain Kirk needs to be a bigger focus. Dig deeper in your knowledge of the chapter. More on qualities of a leader and how Rob fits that definition.

  10. 2. The book The Last Lecture shows that Randy has a lot of leadership skills. There are many things that make leaders who they are. Leaders are positive, courageous, and will always help a person in need. Even though Randy is the one that needs help with his cancer he is still a great leader.
Randy is so positive about everything he does and you need this quality if you want to lead groups of people. A person can do almost anything when they have a positive attitude. When Randy wants to do something he does it and he does it well. Randy is courageous as well. He doesn't let something somebody said stop him. He goes and proves that person wrong. All the qualities of leaders connect to Randy and it shows in the book that he lives his life as a leader.
Randy is a great leader but I believe the ultimate leader is the one that doesn't care what anyone says, gives everyone multiple chances, and is very forgiving. Anyone can be a leader but it would take a lot to become this type of a leader. There are some great leaders of countries that could fit these qualities and also many people that haven't gotten a chance yet that have the same qualities.

  11. #3 - Randy's dream of prizes when he was a child was to be the coolest guy at the amusement park. He thought he could do that by winning the biggest stuffed animal prizes at the carnival. It was a competition between him and his family. He would watch others play the games and learned from them how to win. He did not like to play the games in front of his family. His family thought he was either cheating or secretly buying the stuffed animals from other winners. He said he was a leaner, but not a cheater. He also needed to have extra money to be able to keep playing the games over and over. He also used the stuffed animals to woo girls and met his wife which was also a prize. His dream of prizes about being the coolest guy at the amusement park did surprise me because it was about winning the biggest stuffed animals. Most people dream of a prize of money or trophies. He achieved his dream but winning stuffed animals not like for riding the biggest thriller ride. The biggest prize that I have ever won is a blow up fish at an arcade. I played games that seemed easy and gave me a lot of tickets if I won. Then I turned in my tickets and got my prize!
