Ch 23-27

Chapters 23 - 27

As in the past blogs, choose one & write about it.  Make sure you've put in all of your thoughts.

1.  Which was your favorite Pauschism in chapter 23?  Discuss your choice fully.
2.  What did you think about the peer assessment (chapter 24)?  Is that an accurate way to assess peer contribution and efforts? Why or why not?  How important do you think it is that we have someone in your life to keep you in check?
3.  How did positive attitude play a role in chapter 25?  How does positive attitude play a role in your life?  Discuss fully.
4.  How is teamwork necessary in chapter 26?  How is teamwork necessary in school and outside of it?  How can we create good teamwork?  Discuss your thoughts completely.
5.  Chapter 27 discusses the “promised land.”  What does this allude to?  What is “the promised land”?  How does the title fit the chapter?

  1. I did not have a favorite but i strongly believe you can learn a lot from Randy and his pauschism. he is a very bright young man and is going through a great amount of things right now that non of us would want to endure. i think that randy's students should take randy seriously because they never know something like this could happen to them some day. thatds something to think about any of this could happen to anyone so what was our favorite part of pauschism

  2. #4 In chapter 26 Randy has all his students in groups forming virtual realities. After there first project he is just blown away. The students had to work together if they wanted a good grade. The kids did way more than Randy ever thought they could. But Randy didn't let them know that he just told them he wanted better. As team members they worked and worked and just kept on improving. This shown that as a team there is no limit on how far you can succeed. I think this year our football team is a good example of that. They are a team working to succeed and have been doing a good job of it. With out team work they would just be a bunch of talented kids that wouldn't be able to get anything done. Teamwork isn't created it is grown. You can't just through a bunch of kids together and tell them to be team mates. They have to grow together and become one just like how Randy's students did through out there projects. They learn that they are nothing with out each other and to be something they have to work together as team mates.

  3. #1 In chapter 23 Randy gave us many pauschisms. My favorit pauschism was "You can always change your plan, but only if you have one." I believe if you follow that rule you will never completely fail doing something. If you don't have any plan and a situation goes bad it is your own fault. If you do have a plan and a situation goes bad then you can always change it. If everyone had a plan on how to attack life we wouldn't have as many homeless people, people on food stamps, and people on welfare. They would be able think for themselves and not relie on others for a plan. People will always be able to tell who has a plan and who doesn't. For instance, in school the kids who get there homwork done have a plan. The kids who never do there homework do not have a plan. Having a plan will always help you in life. Randy had many pauschisms but this one really stands out to me.

  4. 2. What did you think about the peer assessment (chapter 24)? Is that an accurate way to assess peer contribution and efforts? Why or why not? How important do you think it is that we have someone in your life to keep you in check?
I thought the peer assessment was a good idea because it gave the students a breakdown on how their classmates portrayed them when they were working on projects or assignments together. This might have not been the nicest or prettiest way to do the evaluation, but I think its a good way to be able to assess you peers and it gives you an understanding on what you need to work on to be a better person to work with. If you don't know how others view you, you might just continue on your life without giving a slight thought on how you are viewed by others. I think its important to have someone to keep your life in check because if people view you badly, its going to be harder to try to get your dream job if the employer views you in a way that they wouldn't want you working for their company.

Ask yourself: Are you spending your time on the right things? Now you may ask your self, what this means, it's not a trick question. Are you spending time on stuff in life that won't get you anywhere, or are you doing stuff that will get you farther in life? If you answered stuff that won't get you anywhere, you got some issues to overcome. If your spending time doing the wrong things in life, ask your self, why am I doing this? You could answer that question right away and stop what you are doing, or you could wait until you finish what you started, and see if the project was good or not. People now days do stuff for fun, don't get me wrong, I like to have fun also, but does taking classes on guns or sewing class seem fun to you, if your not even interested in it? you probably answered no. Do something worth your while, and not something you look in the past and say,"wow where was my brain at that day doing this?" Any one can do a (pointless) project, heck I even do. I actually do them all the time, and at the end, I realize that part or thing didn't need to be fixed or replaced, it's just in your head. So the next time you are going to do something, take a second and ask your self, "is this worth my time?"

In chapter 24 Randy was teaching a class and this class was based on working in groups. Randy had all members of the group grade the other members. Randy put this into a bar graph and it showed who was a good group member and who wasn't.
I thought this was a way to let people know if they were a good group member or if they slacked off a lot. It is very accurate because there are many different rotations of the groups and it will take the average of the grades you got from your group members. The graph was a good way to get people that didn't work very hard to realize they needed to work harder.
At the end of the chapter Randy talks to the student that was the "worst to work with" according to the chart. He told him he needed to step it up or he wouldn't get anywhere in life. Randy also to the student that he was the same way. This is important for someone to do this in your life because if you are to arrogant you won't be able to realize it yourself.

  7. #4 In chapter 26 Randy discusses teamwork. When he was a professor he made a class that other students could come and build virtual real programs. They worked together to do this in groups of 4. Randy said he could tell who would have the nicest one by the way the students worked together. Teamwork is necessary in school because if you need to play hard in a sport then you need others to help so you can win. If we get a team project then we would need teamwork to get it done. Teamwork is more important out side of school. This is were if people work like a team things get done. If we all keep an open mind and are willing to work with others then there will be teamwork.

  8. I choose number three because it seems to fit me the best. In chapter 23 it talks about your childhood dreams coming true. Randy says"anyone who starts out with saying my dreams or my childhoods dreams are, interest him." This would be me to if I were dying of cancer. Just me hearing all those things that people want to do, I would be like just do them. Who knows anyone of you could die tomorrow. Anyways this chapter Randy lives out one of his dreams dealing with Star Wars. He also talked about how his friend Tommy took kids to a Star Wars thing and if really changed their lives. This is the positive attitude in this chapter. One of my positive attitudes are that when I was a kid I always wanted to go hunting with my dads hunting buddies. I finally got old enough that I could go hunting with them. It was a dream come true if you ask me. So the end of my blog is coming to an end, may god be with you all.

  9. 1.) Which was your favorite Pauschism in chapter 23? Discuss your choice fully.

"Time must be explicitly managed, like money." There is a lot of truth to this Pauschism. When your time is shortened people only then truly start living. I have seen this in many cases, people just blow through every day life not thinking until something horrific happens, and only then will they treat time like money. People will save money and stress over money, but only the people with shortened time, or a near death situation. I am lucky to have very few deaths in my family, and even less near deaths, and I cherish that. There are many things that remind me to love and live for every day, and that is why time is so important.

  10. 2. What did you think about the peer assessment (chapter 24)? Is that an accurate way to assess peer contribution and efforts? Why or why not? How important do you think it is that we have someone in your life to keep you in check? Yes and no.. They could be just not willing to work on this one project but they could be a really good worker on the other projects. Another thing is that they may not know alot about this one project. You may also not like the people your working with so they could just give some one a bad reflection and then its not accurate. But it could also be like someone does good on this one project and helps and is good but on the other projects they could not help at all. This needs to be over a time so they get a average. For me it is very important some one keeps me on track like my mom she will keep reminding me till i do what she wants so i don't forget. and also when someone keeping you in track it keeps you out of trouble and never lets you forget anything.

  11. 4. As young adults I believe that teamwork is very important both in school and outside of school for many reason. The first reason is that it builds support to each other and also we trust each other more and we can get more accomplished in life and in school. Now how I think we can do this is that we set up work days with parters that we can choose and we all work together and either make something or all work on a project together. Then if something don't work then they know that to be a good team that they have to work together to get that thing done that the one person did not get done. This really relates to the chapter in many ways how randy had to work hard and as a team to accomplishing something and especially when he was teach at Carnegie Mellon college.

  12. “The key question to keep asking is, Are you spending your time on the right things? Because time is all you have. ” this is my favorite because i can actually understand what he is trying to say here he's saying focus on the good things in life and not the bass because u only have so much time left. like if my grandpa died and i just focused on the sad stuff like the fact that he's gone now and u can't get him back that is kind of a dumb thing to do focus on all the good memories u had with him and all the good things he wouldn't want u spending ur days crying about him he would much rather see u smiling and laughing while u look back at all the good things in life that he did and good things about him.

  14.  Which was your favorite Pauschism in chapter 23?  Discuss your choice fully.

My favorite Pauschism in Chapter 23 was Randy taking a time out on page 110. He needed a time-out from work as he was over stressed. On his time out he took a vacation to relax. I like this Pauchism because I feel like I need to take a personal time out a lot myself, otherwise I get too stressed out and I don’t feel like doing anything. I shut down and do not do homework or think right at school. I do go to school and I have cross-country practice on weekdays. This isn’t really that bad, but when I go home I really don’t feel like doing anything else. This is kind of like my own time out after I get home from practice. Weekends are also a good time for me to relax and take a time out. I feel that everyone should be able to get some free time if you have a job, so you can get the stress off your shoulders. I totally agree with this Pauschism and will remember this in the future.
