The Last Lecture: introduction - chapter 3 writing

After reading through chapter three, you need to look at the following writing options.  Choose the one you feel you can delve into the best.  Make sure you have a beginning, middle, & end as well as tell me which number you chose.

Introduction - Chapter 3
1.  Explain the author’s “engineering problem.”  What problems do you have?  How do they compare to the author’s?
2.  What was the title of the first chapter?  What do you think it means?  Connect it to your life, something you’ve seen, or something you’ve read.
3.  Choose 3 different points from chapter 1 or 2.  Discuss why those items caught your attention.
4.  What was the elephant in the room?  Why do we not talk about things?  How can we change this?
5.  If you were in the audience for the lecture, describe what you think your impressions of the opening would be.

Randy is spending a lot of time editing slides. He spends about 1 hr and 30minutes before he takes time off and play's with his kids. He spends hours and hours trying to shorten his speech up, he has about 300 pictures. He doesn't want to drag on about his speech, he wants to make it with in a hour. The day when he is going to give his speech, he still isn't ready for it. I personally think this man is super brave for giving this speech. Not many people can tell the world they are dyeing, and not breakdown, let alone give a speech about it. This man is a hero in my book, and keeps me wondering what will happen later on in his book. I still can't imagen the pressure he has doing this speech, it probably feels like the whole world is on his chest doing this speech. Will Randy be able to sum up his whole life story with out dragging on? I can't wait to read more of the book and find out!

    1. You didn't follow what the question asked... You discussed chapter 2, not chapter 1. Really make sure you focus on what is asked of you. Please redo this.

The elephant in the room is the one thing everyone knows is there but no one wants to talk about. It is usually something that is uncomfortable to talk about. The elephant in the room at the lecture was how Randy has cancer and only has a few months to live. Most people don't like talking about death so he just throughs it out there so the elephant can leave.
Most of the time we try to avoid the elephant and just ignore it for as long as possible. Randy took a different approach and that was the one of the first things he talked about. He knew there was no way of getting away from it and he saw the crowd lighten up after he got done with it.
We can change this by starting off with the most obvious things even if everyone thinks your going to avoid them. So next time your uncomfortable why not let the elephant out of the room so you can get to what you came to do.

  3. 2: an injured lion still wants to roar. It means that when a loins hurt he wants to fight till he cant anymore, and for him that means that he wants to show everyone that he can still do lectures and anything he use to be able to do before he got this terrible cancer. He will not let his kids down and he will try his best to make sure the remember him. He is also going to make a lecture so they really now what there dad was like. It is his way of saying goodbye to his work family. I have expericed this before with my grandpa. He worked till the day he died. He had cancer to and when he got it he didn't feel bad for himself and he just keep living his daily life. He still worked hard for as long as he could till the kemo got to him and really slowed him down. We had the same problem with my grandpa like they did with him because they wanted him to be with his family and spend all of the last times with them. But he was like i wanna work and show everyone I still got it in me. This shows that they both were alike and they wanted one last roar.

    1. You do a nice job thinking of Randy as the lion. The situation with your grandpa gives you a perspective that not everyone has.

  4. 5. If you were in the audience for the lecture, describe what you think your impressions of the opening would be.

If I was one of the people in the audience when he first came out he didn't look like anything was wrong with him. Sure he was not wearing a suit and tie and almost looked like he just got done working at Burger King or any other fast food restaurant. It was not a really good first impression to others in the audience who have never meet this man.
Then he started first off by saying about "If there's an elephant in the room, introduce it" According to Randy Pausch. Then he showed the slide of his CT scan of the 10 tumors in his body. But he didn't look sick at all and he still had hair. Some would think with cancer and knowing you were going to die in a few months they would develop depression. Not him of course as he looked like he was living the american dream with 3 kids and a wife.
I was surprised when he got down and started to do push-ups, usually cancer patients would be weak and fragile, he looked nothing like he had 10 tumors in his pancreas.

    1. You have soon good thoughts. I'm really glad you began with those initial first impressions because it shows me that you read and put thought into this.

  5. The title of the first title is An Injured Lion Still Wants to Roar. Now hands down I thought to myself this is such a great title. I mean come on what would you name it? I think that it is a perfect title because I mean how mean titles is there that has lions in them, exactly none, (Roar). It will just blow people away to have read the title and then the first chapter. The title just describes the whole chapter and to be honest the whole book.
The first chapter was about him not giving up on cancer and him still wanting to right the Last Lecture. It relates to me because if I got a broken arm or something I wouldn't just sit in the house all the time and do nothing. Books have challenges in them all the time and people can get over them. Some people just kill themselves to too get over something.
The book is amazing and I want everybody to read it. If you are already reading it it is probably because you are in Contemporary Literature. The chapter title was perfect it just describes his life. People need to be more lie Randy. If more people are like Randy then the world would be a better place. Oh by the way Lions are awesome (Roar).

    1. I think you struggled with this. I'm not sure you really read the chapter based on how you answered this, and you really don't seem to understand how the chapter and title fit together.

  6. 1. The author is saying that even though there are some things mechanically wrong with him he still wants to show everyone who he really is because physically he still looks fine. He still wants to live life to the fullest even though he may or may not have much of his own life left. He wants to show everyone just because something is wrong and u may pass away from it dosent mean that u spend the remainder of our time in the dumps. He wants u to pick urself and live the rest of that time u have to the fullest and make our life and the people around u the best that it can be for the remainder of our time. he's saying even though that lion is injured he is still going to let everyone around him know who he is and how he is with that last loud and over standing roar. Like he in randys book in the introduction he stated this " I lectured about the joy of life, about how much i appreciated life, even with so little of mine left. i think that this sentence and or statement fits in here well because of what he is meaning and how he says it.

    1. Sometimes I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Really think about his entire "engineering problem." You didn't really show how you could connect to this.

  7. #5 If I were in the audience at Randy's lecture I would feel sad for him. He is such a happy guy that always thinks in a positive way. He knows he only has a certain amount of time left in his life but he does not let his sad emotions show. He gives us great advice on why to think positive on what you have in your life and to stay greatful for life. Randy is a very unique guy because if a normal person had pancreatic cancer their emotions would get the best of them. Randy always stays optimistic about life.

    1. You need to really think about what you read & show me that you read the chapter. Think about things like that initial impression (think about what he was wearing.) Think about his slide show (specifically focus on the beginning of his speech & the pictures that show his tumors.) Think about how he shows his strength.

  8. 5 If I was in the lecture I think it would change the way I thing about some things. I would realize that it is better to be positive even during the the hard times. It is amazing that Randy could be so positive even when he knew that he did not have much longer to live. He didn't feel sorry for himself or thought he was better than any one because he had cancer and only a short time to live. Randy makes people like me realize that it is better to help other and give for others.

    1. I feel you should dig deeper and show me specific things from the chapter to show that you read it. Like I stated in Rob's reply, think about the initial impression, his slide show, and even his strength.

  9. #2 Injured lion still wants to roar. It Means that when your down you still want to be able to be with your friends and family rather then just sitting there in pain. like the one time I had mono. I wanted to be able to go to friends houses and still have a good birthday but I had mono. I mostly just sat in my room and did nothing cause your energy gets drained so fast its not even worth getting up. like 3 days after my 16 th birthday I was over it enough to be able to go back to school and I could only do half days at that time cause again your energy would be drained so fast by half way I could barley stay up. Towards the end I was able to stay up for a while and then I got better and was able to do all that stuff.Thats my connection to being a injured lion who still wants to roar.

  10. 2.) An injured lion still wants to roar, a very true statement in my mind. Any one who is good at what they do wants to prove to themselves as well as others, that the can still power through difficulties and push above and beyond any pain or suffering that may have appeared. I dance. I have been hurt or pushed down by many people. It has yet to stop me though. I have always managed to overcome and difficulties, because even when I am injured, I still want to shine(roar). I have seen many people push through suffering by letting the pain or hardships fuel them into doing something wonderful. For example; My aunt, Joy, she overcame breast cancer. She didn't let it stop her. she then went on to find out she had cancer in her lungs, and she overcame that. It was her 4th battle with cancer that took her. Even up until her last day she still wanted to roar, and her legacy has continued to roar ever since then.

  11. 5. If I were the audience of this lecture I would think this would be a long and sad story. I would also think there will be a lot of good last moment times with the family. He says he only has a couple months to live so hopefully he will accomplish something within that period of time.
The opening to me was sad but it was like he had courage. Randy seems to also want to stay and teach his children right from wrong. He does have a positive attitude and even says "maybe I will be that lucky one that survives."
Randy has a very strong attitude about his condition unlike a lot of people who will panic.

  12. The name of the first chapter is "An injured lion still wants to roar." and to me this means that he knows he is going to die and wants to do one more lecture, and the cancer isn't stopping him from doing it. He wanted to give a last lecture before he died, a way of saying goodbye to those who he didn't know very well and to record for his wife to show to their kids some day when they are old enough to understand what it means and who their father was and what he did. there are some examples from life, people do this all the time they either want to say goodbye to everyone they know or want to be known for something before they die and he didn't want to be forgotten about so despite his wife not wanting him to at first he didn't give up on his last lecture and proceeded to presenting it to the audience. He wasn't all about the lecture though he did want to spend his last few months with his family too he was a very family oriented father and he didn't let the sickness stop him from being there for them and he did as much as he could with his family right to the end.

Randy Pausch is a very positive man that is very fun to listen to. If I would have been in the audience the day he gave his last lecture I would have felt bad at first but then I would have changed my opinion on him. Just listening to Randy in the first parts of his lecture make you realize that this man has some important things to say. The opening to the presentation was an amazing way to start things out.
Randy started out telling about his cancer and how he has battled for a long time. Then he realizes that everyone is feeling bad for him and changes what he is talking about. He tells everyone he is in the best shape of his life and he does push ups. He was making me feel bad about his tumors but then he showed us how he was positive and it didn't bother him. I started to feel less bad for him.
The opening of Randy's lecture make everyone feel the same way. They feel bad at first but then they are relived that he isn't in pain. Randy had a good way to start his lecture

  14. 5.) If I was sitting in that room and listening to randy's last lecture. There would be many thing that would have went into my mind my mind. Like how he was more worried about give this lecture and not so much worrying about his family. Even that he knows he has little time to live. His wife did not want him to do this lecture at all because he needs to worry about he's family. I really want to know why he really wanted to give his last lecture. I really like to listen to his whole lecture. I think all ready this is so inspiring to people why he need to do this lecture and how is he so inspiring.

If I were listening to Randy's Last Lecture, a lot of thing's running trough my head. Who is this man? Why is he telling his life story? Can I get his autograph? I'm sure a lot more thing's are going trough his mind also. Randy sound's like a guy that give's amazing advice, and you should take it. Even though Randy has a short time on earth, he still want's to live life, now if that's not a brave guy, I don't know who is. His story would touch a lot of peples hearts, even mine. I might not relate to his stories, but I sure can feel the man's pain. This man will go down in the History Books!
